AfghanistanVotes.com, a website based in Afghanistan that provides information about democracy and upcoming elections, is now producing pamphlets with the most popular information featured on the site. The goal of these pamphlets is to make the information available to Afghans who might not have internet access or who might not yet know about AfghanistanVotes.com.
AfghanistanVotes.com was launched by IFES in April 2009. Published in Dari, Pashto, and English, the website provides information about the Afghan election system, the Afghan constitution and democracy in general. It also contains links to Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission (IEC) website so visitors can access information on upcoming elections, political candidates, debates, and where to vote.
Since being launched, the website has seen a consistent increase in traffic. One of its most viewed features is the "Weekly Dialogue," a series of interviews with high-profile individuals in key positions. The majority of the visitors to AfghanistanVotes.com are accessing the site from within Afghanistan; other visitors are from all over the world.
A strong democracy and successful elections require an educated electorate who can think critically and discuss election-related issues. IFES is now producing these pamphlets with the same hope that founded the website: to provide Afghans a platform to learn more about democracy and the electoral process.
