A citizen casting his vote
Azerbaijan
IFES’ work in Azerbaijan began in 1997. IFES conducts an annual survey to gauge the knowledge and opinions of Azerbaijanis. This enables IFES to promote an integrated approach to strengthening democracy and community development. Currently, IFES works with local partners to improve the conduct of elections and increase public awareness about the electoral process.

Democracy Assistance
Democracy assistance can be defined as the legal, technical and logistic support provided to electoral laws, processes and institutions.
Civil Society
Civil society is the political “space” where citizens can debate, join groups, and mobilize for change without being threatened or intimidated. Legitimate governments can extend their legitimacy by being accountable to civil society, which is often the ultimate check on the abuse of power.
Election Observation
Observing the electoral process is an important integrity safeguard. It is one of the checks-and-balances that protect the viability and honesty of election administration, as well as the participation of political parties, candidates and interest groups.
